Important! Many owners make their own decision when to remove the bandage after surgery, based on the fact that the cat is hampered by the protective bandage. If the bandage is removed without a veterinarian's recommendation, the pet must be monitored at all times. A special collar can be used to prevent the pet from licking the stitch.

Post-operative poncho for a cat or a small dog with their own hands
Of course, I sincerely wish that your pet will never need this closet item. But alas, animals get sick too, and in some cases it comes down to surgery. My cat needed a diaper after an ovariohysterectomy, which means neutering. Whether a cat should be neutered is a topic for another article.
I didn't think about the leotard beforehand and bought a couple of them at the drugstore at the vet clinic. However, the next morning after surgery it turned out that two pieces are not enough. And after a day, it became obvious that these delicate chintz popovers tear as fast as they dry. So I decided to make a poppet myself, especially since my sufferer was quite successful in untying all the ties to lick the seams.
I carefully considered the purchased poponka and decided to improve both the model itself and the pattern.
Note: the cat already a few hours after surgery may well try to tear the poncho and untie the ties (at least that's what happened with mine).
For this reason I decided to replace most of the ties with elastic jumpers . . Your pet will probably have a long post-operative stitch that will need to be treated frequently.
In that case, for the first few days it may be more appropriate to use a blindfolded dog leash. But as soon as your pet more or less recovers, I recommend switching to a model with jumpers and a minimum number of ties.
If you know about the operation in advance, it is better to make three or four poppies in advance, with a fitting. It will be more comfortable for your pet and for you.
How to cut
My cat is tiny, so the length of the leotard along the abdominal line is only 36.5 cm . Perhaps your cat will need a bootie one and a half or two times as long. Of course, I used a stronger fabric – an old sateen pillowcase – and made it in two layers for security. I also needed about a meter and a half of the cheapest rubber band and a piece of wallpaper for the pattern.
Of course, the model I made is a ladies' model. For the cat, I recommend cutting an oval hole for little things "on the spot" and be sure to sweep the edges by hand so he doesn't chew or swallow the fleece.
What popovers come in.
Among all the variety of pet accessories, cat poppies are of great interest. The pussycat seems to be an animal that is adapted to all living conditions and always behaves independently. In today's world this applies only to common animals, for which the northern country is home. Most purebred cats and pussycats can no longer survive on their own and require help. Hence the interest in the different enclosures.
- Not all breeds are comfortable with the harsh climate. Sphinxes, who came from hot Egypt, it's difficult to survive the winter without an extra coat. It is only natural that warm blankets appeared.
- Sphinxes without fur have an increased perspiration. Leaving streaks on the furniture may not please every housewife. It is worth to dress the pet in a home robe and the problem is solved.
- Those who like to walk with their ward on the street know very well how long it takes her to wash afterwards. Especially if it rained. A rain cover solves the problem.
Aftercare
Cat sterilization, a forced measure, is unfortunately costly. Even with a high rate of wound healing, it takes some time for the suture to tighten.
A cat has a very strong instinct to lick wounds. This is how they heal themselves. But a fresh stitch is very easy to damage. The consequences of a divergent postoperative stitch are well understood by everyone. It is worth doing everything to keep the pet safe. Specialists have long developed postoperative poppies. In the big city it is relatively easy to buy it. Almost every major veterinary clinic has a store of veterinary supplies. Immediately after surgery, you will be helped to pick up a post-operative cat apron.
A device made out of handicrafts
You can also make a cat blanket from improvised means, using pantyhose and socks. Such products are suitable for a small kitten. The sock or tights should be new, clean and well drawn (hand should fit freely inside).
The heel of the product should be placed on top. Next, the following steps are performed:
Despite the simplicity of manufacture, such a bandage can not be called correct. He has only one layer, so it is considered disposable. Also, it is very difficult to dress the animal in such a device. Therefore, it is better to make a normal bandage according to the scheme described above.
How to use it properly
In order for the bandage to perform its function, it must be worn correctly. When putting on the bandage, it is forbidden to tighten it too much with the ties. Also, it should not be allowed to dangle on the pet. The product should not restrain the pet's movements. The harness should be worn with a tight fit to the body.
At first, you need to keep an eye on the cat, as it will try to remove the garment. When handling the seam, you may not remove the product completely. It is enough to untie the back ties, which will lead to the opening of the surgical site.
The bandage should be changed as it becomes soiled. Ideally, a new blanket should be put on the animal every day.
A homemade bandage, if properly made, will allow your pet to endure the recovery period well and return to full life.
When early removal of a protective device is possible
- The surgery was performed by laparoscopy: in this case the wound is so small that protection is not necessary;
- The surgeon used absorbable suture material and wound protection sprays during the sterilization procedure;
- Four days after surgery, the cat's body temperature is normal, there is no bleeding, no redness of the suture, no suppuration.
Important! When using suture material that requires further removal, the bandage should not be removed prematurely, even if it makes the animal feel uncomfortable.
After examining the pet, the doctor may recommend early removal of the protective accessory if:
- aggression is pronounced, the animal continually tears and chews the poncho;
- The animal is afraid to walk around in the harness;
- There are ulcerations below the areas where the fabric presses against the body as much as possible;
- The bandage has become very dirty due to eating and going to the toilet.
Follow-up after the bandage is removed
After the bandage has been removed, the cat's condition should be closely monitored for the first few days. The feline family is characterized by increased cleanliness, therefore, at first the animal will be constantly licking the stitch.
The owner should make sure that the cat does not chew on the edges of the wound.
- Monitor the integrity of the edges of the wound surface;
- check if there is any discharge from the wound in the form of blood or lymph;
- Inspect the suture for redness, inflammation, purulent discharges;
- control whether there are knots and swellings on the edges of the wound surface.
Any abnormality detected is cause for an unscheduled visit to the veterinarian.
How to properly put on and tie a cat's leash
Postoperative clothing should not restrain the body. A distance the size of the width of a finger is left between the bandage. On the correctness of putting on depends on the comfort of the pet, the speed of healing of the suture.
- Apply the bandage to the abdomen. Put it under the paws, the ties go out on top.
- Fix the first two pairs of tapes on the neck.
- Fix the third ties behind paws and connect to the second pair.
- Fix the fourth and fifth pair on the back close to hind legs.
- Tie the edges of the tapes in pairs. Leave an opening in the tail area.
The improperly worn post-op garment will cause the pet to become restless and make attempts to remove the latch.
Recommendation! Leave the ties long when sewing, cut them off after fitting.
Wearing a bandage speeds up healing and recovery after surgery. Popona sew their own, remake from pantyhose, socks, old children's clothes. What method will you try for your pet? Share your feedback in the comments.
