The long way home: 10 shelters for homeless animals in St. Petersburg
If you dream of finding a faithful friend or help those who really need it, visit the homeless animals. They will welcome any feasible help and you are guaranteed positive emotions from communicating with pets. Peterburg2 collected for you a selection of the main St. Petersburg shelters.
On the World Animals Protection Day that is celebrated on the 4th of October Peterburg2 journalists made a list of the main shelters for homeless animals in Petersburg and Leningrad region and studied their condition. In social networks each organization emphasizes the deplorable situation. Shelters lack financial aid, and the number of homeless animals increased significantly in September.
Below you will find a list of different shelters for homeless animals – cats and dogs. Each of them accepts medicine, food, toys and goodies for their charges, as well as financial help. Of course, they are also waiting for responsible, kind people who are ready to find a new friend.
If you don't have time to go to the region or suburbs, the shelters will come to you. So, on October 8 and 9 at Kirov Palace of Culture on Vasilyevsky Island will be held the traditional festival "The Way Home," which will bring more than 70 animals. You can meet them, and volunteers will help you to choose a friend according to character, size and lifestyle. Lectures about animals are also planned. You can also bring food, toys and medicine to the festival and give them to the shelters.
Who knows, maybe that's where you will meet your new best friend!
Rzhevka Shelter
More than a hundred cats and dogs are in the care of the shelter. You can see them all on the organization's official website – the "catalog" section has a photo of each animal and information about them. You can also meet them in person – come to the shelter and bring goodies, karma and medicine.
This is a private shelter, supported solely by the efforts of the owner, her staff and a few volunteers, as well as thanks to the support of concerned people. There are more than 60 dogs and 40 cats in care and there are areas for walking and playing. The organization accepts all the help it can get – there is a list of what the animals need in the space's VK group.
Health Care
If you, for various reasons, need to transfer an animal to a shelter (for example, you cannot keep your own animal at your place of residence, or you found an animal without owner care (neglected) and want to take part in its fate, you should consider the following circumstances.
At present the work with neglected animals in St. Petersburg is carried out with the active participation of representatives of animal protection organizations.
The purpose of their work is the protection of neglected animals, rehabilitation, adaptation and preservation of animal health, including animals with disabilities, as well as increasing the level of humane attitude toward them in society. These organizations run shelters for neglected animals.
All shelters in St. Petersburg are non-state and operate at the expense of the owners, as well as from sponsorships and various donations.
At the same time, organizations engaged in keeping animals must comply with the requirements of the legislation of the Russian Federation.
The property facilities, where the keeping of animals is carried out, shall be specially equipped for keeping animals, taking into account their species specifics; the materials used for the equipment of such facilities shall allow carrying out disinfection measures.
Necessary antiepizootic measures (vaccinations, treatments, laboratory tests) shall be taken in relation to animals kept in such facilities.
In order to ensure compliance with the above requirements, you can ask to inspect the facility where you plan to place a neglected animal, and familiarize yourself with the documents confirming the antiepizootic measures (registration certificates (passports) of animals with marks of vaccinations and antiparasitic treatments, protocols of laboratory research).

"Devoted Heart" is about responsible treatment of animals. "Devoted Heart" is about defeating the low level of culture towards our lesser brothers. About care and love. Protection and custody. A person's conscious attitude to the choice of a pet.
Shelter "Ilyinka"
There are almost 300 animals in Ilyinka Shelter that were found by volunteers and found on the streets because of cruel people. All of them need help and a new friend. Most of the shelter's charges are elderly dogs and cats who need constant medical care. In the VK group you can find information about the animals, as well as the help they can and should get.
"Galkino Podvorye" considers its main goal to "ensure the safety, quality care and decent maintenance of the animals before they leave for their new homes." There are about 60 dogs and 19 cats living there now and a few animals are in overnight care. The animals from this shelter as well as from other shelters are dreaming of finding caring owners. There are pictures of each one in the VK group. The shelter also needs financial help.
Good Town Shelter
The owners of the shelter believe that "there are more people willing to help animals than people willing to throw them out on the street." We hope so, too! This shelter is located in the Moscow district, and they will also gladly accept any help they can give to their charges, and reliable, loving owners are waiting for them with open arms.
There are more than 20 animals living in "Polyanka" who are dreaming of a new friend. The shelter offers the opportunity to become a guardian for one of their charges, either in person or remotely. You can also sign up for pet walks in the VK group – it is like a date, but you should not be late and it is better to come right away with a tasty treat.
Shelters for dogs in St. Petersburg
In total there are 17 private shelters for dogs in St. Petersburg, which exist due to charitable contributions. They are created by private organizers and charitable foundations. It is estimated that about 1,700 dogs and 2,000 cats live there. At any of the shelters, you can become a guardian of a dog and visit or take it home under your own responsibility.
For the record: Since 2011, the National Association of Animal Aid Organizations "We're Together" has been in operation. Charitable Foundation "Help for Stray Dogs"
I decided to take a pet from the shelter, what to do: instructions for "adoption"
Thousands of animals are waiting for their owners in St. Petersburg shelters: some were deliberately abandoned, and some were found already born on the street. We are telling you what you should know before visiting the shelter for animals, what problems may arise and why "shelter" residents have a great advantage over "domestic" ones. And also a list of proven shelters from Peterburg2.
First of all, you need to prepare not an apartment for the arrival of an animal, but yourself. The right psychological attitude is important. A dog or a cat is a future member of the family, so it is better to choose an animal together, weighing up your strength. In addition, shelter pets are animals that have already been abandoned once (or maybe more). Therefore, the future owner has a great responsibility not to harm the animal and not to aggravate the psychological trauma.
We will give a list of proven animal shelters at the end of this material. We should warn you right away that most shelters do not advertise their exact addresses, because such institutions are often already crowded, and giving the address provokes the appearance of new "foundlings.
It should be noted that shelters in St. Petersburg are only private. There are no state-run shelters. The number of officially registered shelters is also small. Not every shelter is a legal entity. Then what's the demand? If you decide to take a pet, you should read the rules for transferring animals from the shelter. The rules are almost identical for shelters that are members of the We Together Animal Welfare Association.
Elena Antonova, staff member of the "Island of Hope" shelter
It is also important to read reviews about the shelter to avoid unscrupulous organizations.
The details of the process of "adopting" an animal are told by Yulia Andreeva, a volunteer at the "Friend" shelter :
All potential owners are asked questions about the conditions of the dog and the owners themselves. They are necessarily told about all the disadvantages and difficulties of keeping a dog: gnawed things, damaged furniture, the need to walk, treat the dog, think about the dog at the time of the owners' vacation, the need to use the services of a dog handler, if necessary, etc.
