The history of the phraseology "catnip"
Our smaller brothers have always played an important role in the physical and spiritual development of man. Including they influenced the formation of language. In the process of domestication of animals and further close coexistence with them, people closely observed their habits. Over time, many phraseological expressions mentioning animals have fixed in the Russian language.
In this article we will consider the origin of the phraseology "kot napkal", which is especially beloved by Russian-speaking people.
History of phraseology
The official history of the origin of the phraseology "cat napkal" is based on the analysis and further rethinking of the behavior of the pet. Long observations have shown that it is not characteristic for a cat to cry or shed tears. The reinterpreted image is formed by means of the folklore technique "nebyvalshchina". This version is scientific and is fixed in the Dictionary of Phraseological Expressions of the Russian language.
The second version refers us to the Arabic language. According to the legend, the phraseological expression came from the phrase used by Arab traders "koti nailak", with the meaning "to stop receiving any money. During the trades, the Russians heard this phrase, very much in tune with the expression "kot naiblak" and, supposedly, began to use it in their own speech. You can come across this version on the Internet. It has no scientific evidence and is not recorded in the dictionary.

Where did the expression "Cat's piss" come from?
Language is inconceivable without idioms. Surely many of us have heard the expression "horse in apples," "dog in the hay," "stupid as a goose. And there is also an expression that sounds funny to some, but strange to others: "a pig in a poke. It is a phrase used to describe an acute deficit, or lack of something: "We have no money," for example.
The origin of the expression is not difficult to understand: cats have been domesticated thousands of years ago and lived next to people even more than other livestock. A cat could also represent the gods: the Egyptian goddess Bastet had a cat's head, and the Slavs could take the form of a cat as the god Veles. Cats were always kept close to the house as a catcher of mice and a protector: the cat, according to legend, could negotiate with the spirits that dwell on the places where the home was built. That's how the tradition was born to have a cat first at housewarming. That's probably why there's so much attention to these animals.
Of course, no one has ever seen tears in a cat's eyes. The profuse secretion of eye fluid occurs only when the animal is sick. Moreover, such a phenomenon in cats is observed more often than in other pets, and why exactly the cat had the honor to "cry" about the acute deficit, we can only guess.
However, there is another version, rather exotic. It is connected to the so-called "difficulties of translation. This is a direct analogy with "The Jolly Roger," which was born as a result of an English misunderstanding. The same may have been true of the Slavs. In Arabic there is an expression "kat nailak," which literally means "not enough money."
Probably the eastern peoples, whose source of material wealth was abruptly drying up, compared themselves to weeping animals. It was as inconceivable as a dramatic dip in income.
When does a cat cry?
Why is it that when they want to say that something is very little, they say "not much"?
Answered by Roman Telpov, Associate Professor of Pushkin State Institute of Russian Language, Ph.:
– This colloquial and joking expression in the phraseological dictionaries really means "very little, insufficient quantity". The situation underlying this phraseological expression is very simple: no one has seen a crying cat. Therefore, this image in the figurative sense can mean something extremely insufficient. And the perception of a cat as a cunning, sneaky animal, which should not be trusted, only strengthens the impression of so little.
By the way, this expression belongs to the type of phraseological-alogisms, which depict an unbelievable, "upside down" world. Here are other examples of such expressions: "to get away with it", "to carry water in a sieve", "needs like a wolf's tie" (variants: "like a cow's saddle", "like a fish's umbrella"). The main feature of these word combinations: they emphasize the absurdity of the situation.
