What to poison cats quickly and effectively

One last warning. Antifreeze has a sweet taste, and cats like the smell of it. If a domestic cat has a chance to enter the garage where at the beginning of winter the owner poured antifreeze in the radiator, the cat can find a puddle of spilled liquid on the floor and lick it. Ethylene glycol can cause permanent kidney damage. The cat may even go into a coma. Puddles of antifreeze most often form under a car. There they are hard to see and not easy to reach with a rag, so it’s likely that the fluid will remain unwiped. Unfortunately, the narrow space under the car is much more accessible to a cat’s small body.

The most common and dangerous poisonous substances for cats. Part 1

Severe intoxication of the body is a scary thing that will provide prolonged excruciating pain and can even be fatal. Our beloved pets are not immune to this disaster: cases of poisoning are regularly recorded in veterinary practice. Therefore, a caring owner needs to be aware of poisonous substances that threaten the cat or kitten. The Murkosha Center team looked into this topic.??

Kitty Ryabinka, who went home from the shelter on March 29, 2019: “Napping, lying around and loafing!)) Oh, and also enjoying the flowers?” And no harmful substances! ☝?

Before we talk about the effects of various poisonous substances on cats, let’s clear up some general points:

? Metabolism: humans and cats have completely different metabolisms! As a consequence, substances that are safe for humans can be toxic to cats. Body size also matters: what is a microdose for humans (relatively safe), for a cat will be a “killer” dose.

? Cats are extremely curious creatures! If something is lying somewhere, most purrs will have a strong desire to go over and see what it is. Or maybe even taste it. This is one possibility for a cat to poison itself with poisonous substances.

? Cats are used to hiding their pain. Cats are solitary predators, and a sick animal is weak and vulnerable, defenseless against attack. Therefore, a solitary predator must hide weakness and pain until the last moment. Therefore, it is not always possible to see alarming symptoms at an early stage, sometimes they are seen when it becomes too late. In the case of intoxication, this is especially true.

Thus, poisonous substances for cats can be divided into two groups.

1. Substances, the toxicity of which is quite obvious, are poisons in their direct purpose. They can get into the cat’s body through negligence (the substances are in an accessible place + curiosity of the whisker) or due to ignorance of the owner.

What is poisonous to cats?

In addition to common poisons, cats are susceptible to many substances that may be encountered in their daily lives. Such substances include the modern chemicals with which we lightly surround ourselves and cats. We try to clean up the environment and keep it clean, but from the cats’ point of view we often unwittingly contaminate it.

Disinfectants and pesticides cause the most trouble. We may need them in our lives, but when we use them we must not forget about our cats, otherwise the animals will suffer sooner or later. We need to keep this in mind when using chemicals both inside and outside the home – gardens and farms. Not only wild animals suffer from the technical achievements of modern agriculture. The greatest danger to the walking cat are poisons designed to control rodents. People use a variety of mouse and rat poisons, forgetting that at the initial stage their action leads to slowing down the rodents and they become easy prey for the hunting cats. In other words, a poisoned mouse most often ends up in the cat’s stomach. And the very poison that helped the cat catch the rodent, of course, remains in its body, which threatens the cat with the most serious consequences. After the cat eats such a mouse, it may vomit, and frothy saliva may come out of its mouth. The animal’s pulse may become weak and breathing may become labored. Convulsions or bleeding may also occur. If a large dose of poison is contained in the eaten rodent, the cat may die.

Another danger lies in those powders and spraysthat are commonly used in the home, such as lawn care products. A cat lying on grass sprayed with weed repellent and then thoroughly licking its fur can easily ingest such poison. In an apartment cats lying on the floor or any other surface can also get on their fur with disinsectants, disinfectants and substances used for maintenance of furniture. In this case the clean-clean cat may salivate and swallow a dose of the “helper” substance. Small amounts may do no harm, but since nowadays such hygienic measures are performed on a grand scale, unhappy pets run a great risk.

The purpose of our lives is self-expression. Showing who we are to the fullest – that’s what we live for. But in this age, people have become afraid of themselves. They have forgotten that their most important duty is to themselves. Of course, they are merciful. They will feed the hungry, clothe the poor. But their own souls are naked and starving. We have lost our courage, or maybe we never had any. Fear of public opinion, that basis of morality and fear of God, the fear on which religion rests, is what dominates us. Poison a cat? Is it possible? If google did not help, then only poisoned, but still alive mouse probably) Or pour something in the milk. Just look what would not come out as in Tom and Jerry.

How to get rid of cockroaches without poisoning the cats?

Cockroaches began to appear in the house (after a 14-year absence), obviously they came. How to get rid of them, so that the problem does not worsen, the safest way for animals (there are three cats in the house) and humans?

There are special cockroach poisoners. Sold freely, are called traps for cockroaches. You can buy to arrange and there is no problem. But. Be sure to wash everything! So that there are no so-called traca tracks!

You can buy any product, and the box to make yourself! Or you can use a ready-made box, like a soapbox with holes.

Or you can call in specialists who will disinfect all the insects in your apartment and they will go to the neighbors. If you advise your neighbors to do the same, the cockroaches will come back to you!)

In practice nothing gives one hundred percent result. Or almost nothing. Cockroaches do come back and keep “settling” in houses and apartments more and more.

You buy store remedies, some die, the rest survive, and new ones come in, apparently.

The most effective way is to contact professionals. But it is better to take the animals out of the house for a while (which is not always possible). Although they give a guarantee, but in fact no one can guarantee, the animals have different health, who can say with certainty, what and how it will affect. That is why I am afraid to call professionals because of the cat, and there is no place to take it.

I set traps. Cockroaches get caught a little bit. There are also products in the form of ointments, crayons. They all help only to some extent. There is also an option with boron balls. You make them yourself. You buy boric acid powder at the pharmacy. They are mixed with egg yolk, made into lumps and spread around the apartment so that the animals can’t reach it.

Precautions

The lawn should be treated. No one here will infringe on the right of the cottager or villager to have clean areas. But the consumer (the lawn owner) must have at least some responsibility to the neighbors and their pets. Is it difficult to talk to them, tell them about the harmful effects of the drug, ask them to keep their pets indoors? Yes, you can just write in big letters on a piece of paper: de, here, I notify you that tomorrow night I will spray my lawn, take care of the cats. And let it hang on the fence for a day.

Who knew how in this situation right now, thinking over this new information for me, I want to be wrong!

The police can’t do anything.

– Cats are magical creatures, Vitalis says. – Not without reason in different cultures they are considered mystical and sacred. I once had a cat, it died. I missed it very much. Cat people know that once you lose your pet, it’s hard to be without a cat in the house. Three years ago, some musician friends presented me with a kitten. We thought it was a girl, but it turned out to be a healthy guy – smart, intelligent, handsome. I live on the first floor, and of course he took a lot of walks. And then he was poisoned. In just two weeks, 30 cats died in our yard and in the neighboring yard, and so – even more.

– Of course. We formed an action group – there are local grandmothers, and women for whom the cats were like family, and even dog owners. This is a huge tragedy for our neighborhood. But the police don’t know what to do. There is no protocol governing such a situation. They dumped Article 245 on the police, punishable for cruelty to animals, and then what? They are confused. Who and at whose expense should examine dead bodies and where should they be kept?

– I want to take the initiative to make sure that the issues of animals are dealt with by the public, who have been given the authority. And the police would help if necessary. At one time there was a position of animal inspector, but it quickly disappeared. And there are a lot of animals in the city. And they are not going anywhere. Someone should centrally monitor their vaccination, chipping, and population control. This is a federal problem. No country was able to get rid of stray dogs and cats, no matter how hard they tried. Sobyaninby the way, banned bricked-up ventilation windows in houses and putting bars on them. Apparently, it was explained to him, that if it weren’t for cats, there would be hordes of rats running through our streets.

– There were three versions. The first was an accident. They had been poisoned by some rotten meat. But it was clear that this was a planned action. The second was the work of some cathunters. But I find it hard to believe. When we publicized the case, we got letters from Perovo, Electrozavodskaya, Fili-Davydkovo, Mytnaya. Everywhere the same thing. How can you hate cats, to strain so much?! And this is where the scariest, most cynical and uncomfortable version, about which no one wants to hear.

Nerve agent.

– I do not rule out that these are structures that receive a license to capture stray animals. Moreover, they often have nothing to do with the animal world. For example, they repair roads. And there is a lot of money in the trapping business, tens or even hundreds of millions. Where, for example, are trapped animals to go in our area? There are no cat shelters here. There are only a few of them in Moscow. It is much easier to find youngsters who will put the poison where it is needed. And pocket the money. I found out that the first cat kills started when the city started being improved, with the installation of curbs and so on.

But even if the shelters are close by. In researching information on the Web, I found that some of the offices that get tenders for cat trapping also own animal shelters. This, however, was in Kazan. That is, they catch the animals themselves, post them, and report back to them. Who checks them? How many animals, were they there at all? Weed removes an unnecessary chain, and you can account for any number. There are fewer of those same cats on the streets? So they’re doing a good job.

– That’s what I thought too, but we found out they don’t. After all, it’s pretty expensive. Most likely, they used the toner, which the cats like to taste, but they die painfully afterwards. Their hind legs fall off, then their front legs fall off, they scream and cry, they lose their bearings. But there’s another theory. Our group includes a certified doctor-toxicologist, who used to take part in military actions. So she claims that the symptoms are similar to the nerve agent they used in Central Asia to kill wild plague animals. If such a thing is being used in Moscow now, this is real terrorism.

Cats are an important part of the city ecosystem, they destroy rodents

Ten most dangerous poisons for a cat

  • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen or naproxen. This is the most common cause of poisoning in an animal. These pain medications can cause stomach and intestinal ulcers as well as kidney damage.
  • Acetaminophen is especially toxic to cats, damaging red blood cells. Just two potent pills can be fatal to a cat.
  • Antidepressants, which can cause vomiting and, in more severe cases, serotonin syndrome, a dangerous condition in which fever, heart rate and blood pressure rise and seizures can occur.
  • Methylphenidate. This drug for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a stimulant for animals, increasing heart rate, blood pressure and body temperature.

Poison No. 2. Flea and tick medications. Poisoning can occur if a topical preparation is swallowed or applied too diligently. In addition, some flea preparations developed for dogs can be fatal if used on cats.

Poison #3. Human food. It is important to take care that the cat does not eat foods that can cause her poisoning or upset stomach. Foods that should not be given to a cat include:

Poison No. 4. Poison for rats and mice. Rodenticides can cause severe symptoms and death if ingested.

Poison No. 5. Animal drugs. We can get sick or die from medicines designed to help us. Cases of animal poisoning from veterinary drugs are also not uncommon. Some of the most problematic drugs include pain medications and helminths.

Poison No. 6. Indoor plants. Cats have been known to eat houseplants, and this habit isn’t just bad for your potted treasures. Many common beautiful houseplants contain poison for cats that can cause them serious harm and even death. Here are some plants that are toxic to cats:

Preventing Poisoning

The best way to reduce the likelihood that your beloved cat will fall victim to poisoning is to prevent your pet from being exposed to dangerous substances.

  • Keep all medications, even those in baby-proof bottles, in cabinets that are out of the cat’s reach. If you accidentally drop a pill on the floor, be sure to find it immediately. Watch out for anyone who might need help taking medication, such as the elderly.
  • Always follow the recommendations on flea and tick medications, and never use dog products on cats.
  • Although some “human products” can be safely given to animals as treats, other products may be toxic. If you have questions about the safety of products, consult your veterinarian. You can also give treats made specifically for animals to make sure you don’t make a mistake.
  • Make sure the rodenticides you use are stored in metal cabinets or on high shelves where animals can’t find them. Remember that cats can be fatally poisoned by eating poisoned rodenticides, so always be very careful when using these products. Tell your neighbors if you use rat bait so they can protect their animals from exposure to the poison, and ask them to do the same for you.
  • When buying plants for the house, choose ones that won’t cause problems if the cat eats them. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals website has a list of toxic and non-toxic plants by species. If you decide to buy toxic plants, be sure to keep them in a place where the animal can’t get to them.
  • Keep all chemicals and cleaning products out of the reach of animals.

Ticks in cats: treatment at home

Mites are more often encountered by pets that walk outside. However, the parasite can also end up on a domestic cat by attaching itself to human clothing or the fur of a dog that also lives in the apartment.

Ticks are dangerous because they carry Lyme disease, ehrlichiosis and other pathologies. They can cause high fever, depression, seizures, miscarriage.

To prevent this from happening, the pet should be regularly treated against ticks with special products, such as Bravecto for cats. Do not give anti-tick medications that are only for dogs, especially tablets.

Important: even a treated animal should be inspected regularly, since a tick can still get a hold of it. You should always have a tool in your veterinary medicine cabinet to remove the parasite. You can’t just pull it out, because if the tick is infected, it may release infected saliva into your pet’s bloodstream.

  • Grasp the parasite with tweezers as close to the skin as possible.
  • Rotate the arthropod around its axis, keeping it perpendicular to the bite without tilting it.
  • Pull the parasite out slowly. Abrupt movements are not allowed.
  • Destroy the tick – throw it into boiling water, burn it.
  • If the head of the arthropod remained in the skin, remove it with tweezers, treat the bite site with disinfectant.

Instead of tweezers, you can use a string, making a loop around the place where the tick is embedded in the skin, tying a strong knot. If you don’t have any devices, you should use your fingers. Wrap them in gauze (bandage) or gloves beforehand.

Insecticides, rodenticides and other chemicals

The taste of some chemicals is particularly pleasant for cats. Keep all such chemicals under lock and key to prevent accidental poisoning of pets.

  • Antifreeze
  • Detergents
  • Bleach
  • Rodenticides (rodent poisons)
  • Insecticides (insect repellents)
  • Anti-icing agents (pets can lick residue off their paws)
  • Flea and tick repellents
  • Herbicides

? Human food.

But no, there will be compassionate companions who give the cat sausage and dumplings, justifying themselves with the words “sorry for the cat, others eat and nothing” or “something to feed”.

This “pity” later becomes a real problem for the cat in the form of IBC or pancreatic failure.

  • ❌ coffee, tea, chocolate and products containing them;
  • ❌ alcohol (of course, not in its pure form, but in the same fried meat in wine sauce, for example, and you never know where else alcohol is added);
  • ❌ onions and garlic in dishes;
  • ❌ grapes and raisins;
  • ❌ yeast dough and yeast;
  • ❌ sweeteners (xylitol, sorbitol).
