Where to place a cat

Cats are the most common pets. According to various estimates, they live in 46% of families in Russia. The popularity of cats is easy to explain: they are unpretentious, get on well with people, are very rarely aggressive, and do not need special care or training. Yes, and walk them twice a day is not necessary, which for many is also reason enough to have just cats. But anything can happen in life and have to give up a pet. Someone got a cat and was surprised to find that he is allergic to allergies, and being in the same apartment with a very cute, but fluffy creature, causes a lot of problems. Someone had a long-awaited baby who suffers from allergies. Moving to another apartment is another reason. Not all landlords are tolerant of furry friends. It also happens that the cat, which appeared in your family, too wild temperament and does not get along with you, so it is urgent to give him in good hands. There are many situations, but the question is the same: where to put the cat if it is not needed?

In fact, there are a lot of options to adopt a pet. Yes, it will take patience and a little effort, but the result will not make you wait long. Consider the most popular options that people use.

Street

Sometimes a person doesn't even think about where to place the cat, choosing the easiest way. The street. And the information on the Internet often inclines to the choice of this option. There is a well-established myth that cats are wild animals and easily adapt to new conditions. Their sleeping hunting instincts come back to them, and they feel almost better outside than inside the apartment. Of course, this is a popular misconception. There is some truth in it: cats can really survive outside, but only those that were born outside. A domestic cat, no matter how playful and cheeky he is in the apartment, can hardly compete with outdoor cats. He doesn't know how to get food, he knows nothing about dangers and is hardly able to fight a battle-hardened predator. And if he is castrated, he has no chance at all. But that's not even the worst part. Have you seen street cats? They are hardly healthy. More often than not, each of them has a dozen or so illnesses that cause them to live far less than their counterparts. Pets have an even worse immune system, so the street is the worst place to put a cat.

Is it possible to put a cat into a shelter forever?

We should say right away that the real shelters are not built on the lifelong housing of stray animals, but on the contrary, they try to find a home and good owners for them as soon as possible. We often hear from people who want to give their pets to us the question, "Do you also foster?" In fact, placement is the main task of the Murkosha shelter, but the medical care, proper treatment and socialization of animals is that very "more". Of course, these are important parts of our work, but not an end in itself.

Because of the superficial understanding of shelters and the bad reputation of some of the institutions that claim to be shelters, false beliefs are created in society that interfere with the work of real shelters. Let's look at the most common ones.

Just because they are not needed by their former owners and end up on the street for various reasons does not make them unnecessary in principle. After all, there are reliable people with a good heart who are looking for a friend from our smaller brothers, who want to do the right thing and are not chasing a breed or a trend. They make great hosts for the wards of Murkosha and other shelters. Each month we take in more than 100 animals that many people mistakenly think are unwanted. We are sure that their new families will strongly disagree with this thesis.

Myth #2: Once an animal goes to a shelter, he or she never goes out and spends the rest of his or her life in a cage.

A shelter is a new chance, not a last resort. Finding and finding a home for their charges is the main task of such organizations, because it is through active sheltering that we manage to help the largest number of homeless animals. For example, the average time of a cat's stay in the shelter "Murkosha" usually does not exceed 2-3 months. During this time, we have time to perform all necessary procedures (quarantine, chipping, vaccinations, paperwork, sterilization) and find a reliable owner, who can be trusted with the animal.

Myth #3: The sick, old, disabled, feral and cats with a "bad" character have no chance of finding a new family.

"Kotospas: freeing pets from bricked-up basements

Another one of the foundation's projects is Kotospas. Its goal is to free the cats from the basements of buildings with littered vents (holes for ventilation). The basement is the main habitat of cats in winter, and without such a shelter, they can die.

"The project has been in existence since 2014 and both provides advice on the legislation on airlocks and works to propose legislative initiatives in this area. In particular, with the participation of the Foundation, an amendment was prepared to the rules for the maintenance of common property in apartment buildings, according to which one vent must be open," says Anna Feldman, curator of the "Cat Rescue" area.

To inform the project volunteers about a pet bricked up in the basement and get instructions on how to proceed, you may call by phone: +7 499 112-07-49. The number of calls to "Kotospas" is constantly growing: in 2019 there were 324 reports, in 2020 – 381, and in 2021 – already 456. In one out of every four cases, people opened the holes on their own. In 75 percent of the cases, the management company had to be contacted to rescue the animals.

How it happens

"Murkosha" is the only center for cats in Russia, which has a comprehensive approach to the issue of animal rescue. All our team members are former volunteers, and each of them has dozens of saved lives under their belt. By our own experience, by trial and error, we have developed a system under which any cat – whether it is an old pet or an animal with a disability – has a chance to become homely and happy.

We work with guardians on a partnership basis: you bring us your cat and provide for its financial needs, and we take care of all the work from the moment the cat is adopted until it finds someone who can take care of it. For information about availability and terms of admission please fill out the form

When a cat is admitted, a veterinarian examines it, treats it for parasites, vaccinates it and chips it. The cat gets an international veterinary passport

The cat is quarantined for at least 21 days. During this time, the Murkosha staff identifies his health peculiarities.

During this period, photographers create an album for the cat, and the cat goes out to PR and can already be seen by future owners.

After quarantine (if necessary, treatment), the pet goes to one of the show rooms, where the shelter guests choose their new family members.

Adoption

  1. Information about the pets is entered into a unified database, where the account of all new arrivals and departures is kept, with their chip numbers, contacts of their guardians and owners. The guardian is the person who brought the cat to the shelter and is responsible for it until it is adopted. Information about sterilizations, vaccinations, treatments at the clinic, the whole history of the cat is also entered into the database.
  2. Our photographers take photos of the cats and give them to the authors of the texts. At the moment of moving the cat to the showroom, each one has its own Internet post with pictures and text.
  3. Each cat's post is published on our website (160,000 unique visitors per month) and in all of our social networks (where we have over 70,000 subscribers). Also, if possible, the post is published in all thematic resources of the Internet and media.
  4. If a person likes the cat, they contact the shelter. Our contacts are listed in each cat's post. At this stage, the potential owner is interviewed about his/her responsibility towards the cat: recommendations are given, which he/she studies before the visit. The potential owner then comes to the shelter to get acquainted.
  5. The shelter is open to visitors every day: both for those who want to pick up an animal and for volunteers. Those who come to meet our charges are greeted by a shelter staff member, shown the cats, and interviewed to see if the person is ready to take responsibility for the animal.
  6. So, if the visitor is ready to become the cat's owner, we draw up a contract with them, in which they undertake to take proper care of the animal, and we take a picture of the lucky customer with their new pet as a memento of their happy day.
  7. The owner receives a brief memo on how to care for the pet in print and electronically. The person is left with our business card with a contact phone number where they can contact us if they have any problems or questions.
  8. Information about the departed animal is entered into the Murkosh Shelter Lucky Group

Why is there a need to part with the animal

Cats live in 46% of Russian families. They look great, unpretentious, with a variety of food and care products the maintenance of a cat in a city apartment and the owners' employment does not present any difficulties. When acquiring a "moustached, striped cat", the owners, of course, set themselves up for the fact that the animal will live with them "happily ever after", but sometimes they have to give it away. There are several reasons:

Allergies. Sometimes already after a person gets a cat, he realizes that he is allergic – itching in the nose, pouring from the eyes and a disgusting condition. Unfortunately, the treatment for this disease is a costly affair and in 80% of cases ineffective. All medications relieve symptoms in short-term contact with the source of the allergy, but you can not count on the long-term effect. If the disease occurred when the cat was just purchased, the problem is minimal, and you can quickly return it to the previous owners with apologies. It is much more difficult if the animal lived in the apartment for some time, and then appeared, for example, a child who is allergic to wool.

Options for domestic cat adoption

If you have no other option but to get rid of your pet, consider a few foster options to help you find your cat new loving owners.

About "releasing to the wild."

For some reason, many people think that a pet will be able to adapt in an outdoor environment, they say, "it's a cat, it'll catch a mouse, it'll find food." That's not true: people have weaned animals off food, provided comfort and vaccinations have compromised their immunity. Even for an outdoor cat in a private house, being thrown out is a huge stress, which leads to a surge of diseases, and the apartment pet is doomed to a slow and painful death.

Dirty stray cat

The Moscow Code of Administrative Offenses stipulates a fine for irresponsible owners of 1 to 2 thousand rubles. However, in the future it is planned to toughen this punishment by equating "abandonment" to cruel treatment of animals, which provides for up to one year of imprisonment. For now, pets are not legally protected.

Sometimes owners of unwanted animals choose an alternative – to let the cat go near the construction site, canteen, farm or other farm, hoping that the animal will find shelter and food there, and thus soothe their conscience. But, first, such an action is tantamount to throwing on the street, and secondly, near such places, there are already many stray animals, which quickly get rid of a domestic "gentleman".

Looking for new owners

At first you can try to put the cat to acquaintances. Talk to relatives, colleagues and friends, in case there is someone who wants to get a pet.

I have a cat at the shelter – a black panther. There are calls – but what if she pulls up furniture … and the child will torture her…. damn well buy a plush toy – the furniture does not pull up, the child does not torture. They all don't need a live toy. Even resent that we do not give.

Murkosha – cats and kittens in good hands

To make any of them happy is simple – take a purr-fly, and devoted heart will return the warmth for kindness!
