You didn't catch mice with me.

They sat on a bench and admired a cat licking three kittens. People walked by. Sometimes they stopped and cooed. The cat looked at them with eyes full of hope, because they were hungry. But those, with few exceptions, walked on, not bothering themselves with unnecessary worries.

Angel and the cat were sitting on a bench. Angel was tall and gray-haired. The cat was old and a little ginger. As much as one can be ginger at his age and dust.

They were looking at a snowy white cat licking her newly born kittens. She was lying in a corner between the houses on a bed of old cardboard boxes.

They sat on a bench and watched as the cat licked its three kittens. People were passing by. Sometimes they stopped and whimpered. The cat looked at them with eyes full of hope, for she was hungry. But those, with few exceptions, walked on, not bothering themselves with unnecessary worries.

Sometimes they looked at Angel and the cat. But they saw an old man with a stick in his hands, and a funny little dog with a long dangling mustache. The dog kept growling and muttering something. It was like she was talking to the old man. Convincing him.

Near the blindingly white family, a girl of about seven suddenly stopped. She wore a bright polka-dot dress and red shoes.

She froze, as if she were standing still, and looked at her mother and her white kittens in wonder.

– Mama," the girl answered and stomped her right foot, "Mama, you don't understand. They are angels! And we need white angels at home.

– No," said Mama again, sternly, and looked at Papa, who was standing beside her, pretending that he was here by accident.

– I fully support you," he remarked to his wife's stern look and turned away again.

There was a battle to be fought, and he didn't want, as always, to be the last man standing.

– Mother. – again, in a voice full of tears, said her daughter. – Mother. If I die, you will keep the cat and kittens as a reminder of me.

– What? What? – Mom shrieked, and, with a gasp, began to crawl on Dad, who suddenly appeared and began to splash water on his wife's face from a bottle.

Tell us, tell us, without deceit, how you caught mice in there. – I was sitting there by the kvass… I sniffed the fried meat, I looked at the cottage cheese – I saw a mouse on the doorstep! I followed the mouse through the closet And ran into the sour cream, I got caught in the sack, The pot tipped over, Salo fell on me… – Where's the mouse? – Ran away…

– Who's walking around in the garden?
– It's me, Mefody the goat.
– What's your business?
– Helping the watchmen.
I guard the cabbage,
I guard every leaf…
– Why a cabbage all of a sudden,
And not radishes
And not onions?
How, tell me, Methodius!
You've forgotten about them, haven't you?
– I haven't forgotten anything,
But I'm not strong enough to do them all.
I don't know how to guard onions,
And radishes make me thin.
And cabbage is good,
And it needs keepers,

Old Children's Poems / "Basil the Cat"

These, living in my memory, children's poems are now – some or more than 100 years old!

Because they were taught to me by my grandmother, who is no longer with us, and my grandmother was born in 1913!
And she was taught these verses by my mother, my great-grandmother, who was born in the 19th century.
So, some poems, exactly, more than 100 years old!

There are poems in Russian and some in Ukrainian, and I remember them, and I'm afraid to forget them, so I want to share them with all of you, so that these unpretentious texts will live on!

Some of the poems in my childhood were recorded on gramophone records – in a series called, I think: "Poems and Tales for Children."
And my little sister and I would listen to another fairy tale or cautionary poem before we went to bed, such as "The Bear, Five or Six Years Old. " or "About Petya, the Fat Kid. ".

I want to keep something published that was dear to me in my childhood, and I thought, what if some of my Guests will be interested in it.

Friends, if any of you are raising children or grandchildren, read such poems to your little ones!
My sons, like my sister and I did when we were kids, used to recite these poems with gusto, standing on a stool like on a stage, at all home parties, and they did it with pleasure!

Our sons, who were small at the time, stood in front of the tape recorder and tried to recite the next poem beautifully and clearly, with expression and without mistakes!
For the story)))

I hope you'll want to teach your children or grandchildren to tell these old nursery rhymes and recite them later at home, under the Christmas tree on New Year's Eve and Christmas Day, or at matinees – in kindergarten, elementary school!

And during any family holiday or just a warm and cozy evening you'll be happy to look at their children and admire their efforts to tell for the family or guests of your home poem on "5 +"!

And you will applaud your baby or toddler so that your child understands how important it is to be able to read poetry by heart, and that it turns out that adults appreciate it!
This means that your baby will grow up to be a smart kid with a kind and open soul, and that's worth a lot!
